Hi Mike,
You're carbon coated spark plug suggests a fuel/air mixture that's too rich. From my experiences, I'd recommend replacing the white spacer and readjusting the mixture screw. You can expect more miles to your fuel, the correct straw coloured spark plug, to use you choke when coldstarting, but best of all, you can expect the glorious backfire!

You say the white spacer was removed before you bought the bike. I hope the spacer is available as a Suzuki spare without buying the whole carb.
